One of the many marvels of bacteriophages, is their ability to form DNA containers (capsids) of many sizes using essentially the same shaped protein. This is possible due to the unique symmetry through which these proteins associate to form the capsid. Capsids always contain 12 pentagonal shapes formed from capssid proteins which make up the corners of the capsid. the remaining space is filled with hexagons formed of capsid proteins, however the number of hexamers can increase while maintaining symmetry in specific steps defined by the triangulation equation. Higher values of triangulation (T) then correspond to larger capsids. While triangulation can theoretically infinitely increase, certain sizes capsids appear to be favored, most notably T=7, T=9 and T=13.
