Certrevirus ɸTE is a fascinating contractile bacteriophage. ɸTE belongs to a fascinating group of viruses that attach themselves to bacteria using the bacterial's swimming machinery (known as the flagellum). We still don't really know how they do this!
Certrevirus ɸTE infects the agricultural pest Pectobacterium atrosepticum. Pectobacterium infections in potato crops particularly can be devastating, resulting in massive losses to crop yields. So we should all be happy that ɸTE is on our side!
