Bacteriophage T4 represents the contractile bacteriophages. These phages penetrate their hosts cell wall via a rapid contraction of an external spring like sheath, once the phages fibers (legs) have firmly attached to their hosts surface. This contraction forces an internal tube like structure through the hosts surface, allowing ejection of the viral genome. This magnificent mechanism was brewed through trillions of generations of phage evolution no doubt. Pretty cool!
