T4 phage is a titan in phage world. First described in the 1940’s phage T4 has served as one of the most intensively studied model viruses on earth.
T4 is realistically, an awful model organism! Not because it's not absolutely radical, but because model organisms are typically selected intentionally as a simple system, used to understand more complex systems. Bacteriophage T4, is anything but simple, and to date represents one of the most complex bacteriophages known (certainly in terms of its structure).
The silhouette of phage T4 is today one of the most recognised depictions of a virus. For all these reasons, T4 just had to be part of our first drop at virion.
Respect the king of phage world. Unlike some of our other designs, there are many groups who have meaningfully contributed to our understanding of phage T4. As such, here are some of the primary sources we used for inspiration in this design. We want to note that we have primarily posted the more recent high resolution references. There are many others who have meaningfully contributed, but we would like to limit our reference list here! Congratulations to all that have helped us understand this titan. Thank you all.
