Phage PhiM1 is a lovely little podophage (short tailed bacteriophage), infecting Pectobacterium atrosepticum, a bacteria that commonly causes soft rot in potato crops (a serious agricultural pest). PhiM1 belongs to the viral order Autographivirales (sometimes referred to as the T-7 like super group), a very large group of phages. A groovy and unique quirk of the T7-like phages, is their tendency to package a large structure inside their head generally referred to as the “ejectosome”. Unlike the long tailed phages, podophages have tiny little tails, incapable of breaching the hosts thick cell wall. Instead, they unravel and eject the ejectosome into the cell wall, forming a channel to inject their DNA. We don’t really understand how they do this, but it's pretty bloody rad!
