BXB1 is a groovy wavy bacteriophage that enjoys long walks on the beach and a good night out with
fellow phage homies. But Monday to Friday, BXB1 gets down to serious business. BXB1 infects Mycobacteria smegmatis, the more docile cousin of the infamous Mycobacterium tuberculosis, widely regarded as one of the most deadly and concerning pathogens on earth. Mycobacteria are a particularly challenging group of bacteria to treat due to their highly complex cell wall structure. As a result, antibiotic treatments Mycobacteria are long, and prone to extremely concerning resistance development. BXB1 is the first mycobacterium phage to be structurally defined. It’s an important critter to understand as the medical science world toils toward new anti-microbial treatments. BXB1 also is rather fascinating just from a structural perspective, though im sure thats obvious from our design!
